OUR MINISTRIES

The God’s Kingdom Kitchen

The God’s Kingdom Kitchen food justice ministries are comprised of the Wentz Food Pantry and the God’s Kingdom Kitchen community meal. Believing that there is enough food to feed everyone and that it is a sin for anyone in the United States (as well as the rest of the world) to experience hunger as a result of food insecurity, God’s Kingdom Kitchen was established in 2009. Through the God’s Kingdom Kitchen, healthy, nutritional meals made by donated foods from area grocery stores, restaurants, community gardens and individuals are served free of charge. Since all of us experience hunger, all are invited to eat with people from every walk of life, every race and ethnicity, with no regard for religious beliefs sitting in fellowship and enjoying a meal.

The Wentz Food Pantry was established in 2011 in order to further provide nutritional support for our neighbors and guests. The Food Pantry is open the third Saturday of each month, and an average of 50 families are served every month. Great care went into developing standard grocery bags designed to provide three meals for three days for two individuals. Additional food items are added for families with three to five and six or more individuals as well as amended to address dietary (diabetic and/or high blood pressure) needs. The Food Pantry is supported by financial donations and ecumenical partnerships.

Arts Ministry

The arts ministry is inextricably intertwined with our culture at Wentz UCC. Wentz UCC has established a unique niche in the Winston-Salem community with education and the arts. Many of its current and former members have deep ties in the community through music, dance, literature, visual arts and drama. Many of our former pastors and patrons were connected to Winston-Salem State University forming a strong legacy of education.

Music Ministry

Most African-American places of worship would confirm that their music ministry is special. However, the music ministry at Wentz UCC is most unique, currently led by Dr. Constance L McKoy and formerly by Ms. Simona Allen, Mrs. Frances Coble and 95 years of tradition.

Wentz’s music is a community gift. The Wentz music ministry can provide standard contemporary gospel at a very high level, but it is also one of the few places of worship in Winston-Salem where African American spirituals are still performed, along with traditional hymns and occasional secular offerings in styles from jazz to Broadway.

Drama Ministry

Under the direction of church member Mrs. Flonnie T. Anderson, a well-respected drama instructor in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth Public School Systems, we have made a range of dramatic offerings (Remus: The Musical; J.B.; The Creation) available to the community and made community theater accessible to all.
